New Dominion Section: HerStory

2020-2021 Programs and Activities

NCNW 59th Convention: Several NDS members (approximately 12) attended the virtual 59th National Convention.

Community Service: The New Dominion Section of NCNW  implemented community outreach programs focused on the following service areas: Loudoun County, western Fairfax County, western Prince William County, and Fauquier County.

  • August 2020 NDS-NCNW and PAGE collected items for our student’s college care packages. 22 College Care Packages were delivered to students attending multiple Colleges and Universities: ECPI University, James Madison University, Kent State University, Norfolk State University, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Old Dominion University, Spelman College, University of Virginia, Virginia State University and Virginia Tech University.

  • August 2020 NDS focused on selfcare during the pandemic. We shared information about Coronavirus and provided web links to the National Alliance on Mental Illness and COVID-19 Resource and Information Guide

  • November 11, 2020, NDS supported Prince William County Foster Futures Teen/Young Adult Program with gift card donations. 

  • December 2020 NDS began collecting warm items (gently used hats, scarves, gloves, blankets, socks, and coats) for the month of December.  Provided below are the following shelters that we have contacted by the way of having a phone conversation, along with their needs:

  • Hilda Barg Homeless Shelter – Prince William County: Accepting only gently used coats.  We donated the coats on Saturday, Jan. 9th, 2021, and they will then steam and clean the coats themselves.

  • The North County office for Embry Rucker Shelter – Fairfax County: Accepting only gently used coats.  We can donate coats on Saturday, Jan. 9th, 2021 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and no need to have them cleaned.

  • The Shelter House – Loudoun County: Accepting everything that we are collecting.  There is also a need for women’s underwear if we can.  We can deliver at any time in January 2021.

Health and Nutrition: Health and nutrition activities are paramount to the productivity and growth of the African-American community. During the year we have focused on overall women's health, clean eating habits, diabetes awareness, healthy heart education, and fitness, just to name a few.

  • October 31, 2020, NDS supported breast cancer awareness month by wearing ping. Over 13 ladies participated.

  • January 24, 2021, Dr. Krystilyn Washington is a board-certified ObGyn gave us a presentation filled with valuable information about Cervical Cancer.
